I am here to share my story about my hometown. The canal in the photograph is located near to my hometown. This photo is been captured when we went to our farm. The canal is exclusively meant for irrigation. The area is very well known for coconut trees. You can find acres and acres of coconut farms in this area. Agriculture is the main occupation for the people here.
Water flows in the canal only for the particular time period. Farmers need to pay tax to the Government for using this canal water for irrigation. Farmers are also given loans in banks at a very low interest rates for their cultivation and harvest. Agriculture forms 21% of India's GDP and it's prime a occupation in rural areas. These irrigation canals are the lifeblood for agriculture.
The canal water is used by the farmers by constructing small ditches that let away the water directly to the coconut trees. The farmers will be tension free during this period as they don't want to worry about the water scarcity.
In summary these canals are in one way heartthrob for the farmers :)
