The turkey feast in November is a part of American culture, a celebration of history past. The pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving Day at Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Wild turkeys are natives to North America, and were a common fare for the for the Native American Indians. At the first harvest celebration with the pilgrims and Native Americans, "fowl" was eaten, but it could easily have been geese and ducks.
Wild turkeys are smaller than domestic farm turkeys, although they are both from the same family. Farm turkeys are domestic poultry; they have been interbred and raised to produce heavier birds.
An interesting fact: Americans consume over 675 million pounds of turkey on Thanksgiving Day!
