Country Cloud-Gazing

This is a picture I took last October, after helping my cousin load some hay into his truck at a local farm.
We were over by the fields and I decided to hang out for a bit and watch the clouds through the crop while my cousin was settling with the guy that owns the place.
This is my favorite spot to watch the clouds…in the high crop, where no one can see me. The grass brushes against itself and it makes this calming brushing sound: “Chh, chh.”
In the country, it’s easy to feel lonely in so much open space, but huddled in the middle of the field with such tall crops you can forget how vast the space is. It’s like finding your own little nook in a bookstore, or tunneling under your blankets at night.
It feels safe and quietly loud there. Not the noise of the horses, or the tractors, just the grass brushing against its neighboring plants in the field. It’s perfect.
That's why I decided to take the picture. I always have my camera with me and I wanted to remember that spot. After all, once they get going on that field and start cutting it's a long year without my special spot to cloud-gaze!
