The Farmer's Friend

The barn owl is found nearly world wide. Their wings have silent flight, and with their keen sense of hearing, they hunt their prey in darkness.

Barn owls are nocturnal birds, meaning they are awake at night, and sleep during the day. They emerge from their nest at dusk.

You may see an active barn owl at dawn, and on a rare occasion even see one in flight during full daylight. Because its normally a night creature, it can be difficult to get barn owl pictures unless you happen across one that is resting in a dim spot.

It's habitat is farmland, where it hunts small rodents like mice and rabbits.

Farmers often find these owls more effective than poison in keeping down rodent pests, and they sometimes encourage barn owl habitation by providing nest sites for the birds.

A barn owl is a pretty creature, with it's white heart-shaped face and light brown or gray body. Barn owls may be difficult to find in the wild because they are active at night.
