A foal is the name for
a baby horse that is less than one year old. More specifically, a colt is a male
foal and a filly is a female foal. When the baby is nursing its dam (mother), it
may also be called a suckling. After the young horse has been weaned from its
dam, it is often called a weanling. As the baby horse reaches one year old, it
is no longer considered a foal, and is called a yearling.
